Art Direction Crash Course (for non-artists)

A talk aimed at non-artists that covers “how to art direct”. I want to cover basics like composition, lighting, colors and shape language. But also teach how to stylize, what the difference between a moodboard and a reference board is and just general art knowledge that could be helpful for programmers, gamedesigners and leveldesigners.

This is basically a 50-minute artist bootcamp. I’ve done a similar talk for producers and project managers years ago with the goal of improving team communication. This could help indie devs or smaller teams by providing essential art direction knowledge that bridges the gap between technical and creative disciplines, enabling better collaboration and more effective visual communication in game development projects.
